Sélim Mouzannar was born in 1963 into a family of jewelers, suppliers to the Ottoman Empire since the 19th century. He spent his childhood in his father’s atelier and jewelry store. He went on to study gemology in France and Belgium, and was hired by a large jewelry company to supervise its workshops in Saudi Arabia. This experience then took him to Thailand, where he led the life of a stone seeker in the ruby mines on the Burmese border. He was taken hostage by the Khmer Rouge. What he took from this trauma is a political conscience, which turned him into an advocate for non-violence. A lover of the sea, open air and music, Sélim Mouzannar is passionate about life.
Sélim Mouzannar’s jewelry pieces reflect their creator’s universe. The Ottoman architecture and old Beirut’s Art Deco live in the chiseled frames of the Beirut collection. Sélim Mouzannar’s touch is recognized by his mastery of the “falamanki” cut, or rose-cut, a classic Ottoman jewelry tradition. In his Istanbul collection, the star, a recurrent theme in jewelry, takes on a singular personality charged with symbols. The jeweler’s passion for the sea comes alive his Hydra collection’s camaieu of sapphires in cabochons. His efforts towards non-violence and solidarity is echoed in the Amal necklace, a signature Sélim Mouzannar piece, which won the Couture Design 2016 prize. His solid expertise in cuts and precious stones, and his unparalleled eye for gemology, are communicated in the luminosity of his pieces, from the simplest to the most exceptional.
Far from working alone, Sélim Mouzannar believes in the power of synergy. He opens his label and workshops to creators whose taste and culture resonate with his. Annick Tapernoux, Ranya Sarakbi and Tayfun Mumcu are part of those “invited” to the Maison Sélim Mouzannar.
In 1993, Selim Mouzannar decides to open his first atelier in his birthplace, Beirut, in the old Ashrafieh neighborhood, and his signage followed in 1999. The 2006 July War disrupted a continuous seven-year development and pushed Mouzannar to implement his international expansion. Today, you can find the brand in Turkey (Midnight Express in Istanbul); the United Kingdom (Harvey Nichols) Annoushka (Harrods, and Liberty in London); France (Le Bon Marché in Paris); Switzerland (Le Bongénie in Geneva); the United Arab Emirates (Harvey Nichols, Bloomingdale’s); Bahrain (Four Seasons Hotel), and the United States (Jeffrey’s, Elyse Walker, Broken English…)
